⚠️ SCAM WARNING: Fake Virgin Media Cheque Letters Circulating

We want to alert all customers to a dangerous new scam currently affecting households across the UK. Several people have recently reported receiving fake letters claiming to be from Virgin Media, including a cheque attached at the bottom and a QR code that encourages you to “verify” or “activate” the payment.

Do NOT scan the QR code

QR codes in these fraudulent letters often lead to malicious websites designed to steal:

  • Personal information
  • Banking details
  • Login credentials
  • Identity data

Do NOT attempt to cash the cheque

The cheques included are not genuine and may be used to trick you into providing financial information or to initiate further scams.

Virgin Media has confirmed these letters are fake

One recipient contacted Virgin Media directly. After checking the details, Virgin Media confirmed:

  • The account number shown on the letter does not exist
  • The correspondence did not come from them
  • Virgin Media does not send unsolicited cheques with QR codes

In this case, the recipient became suspicious because their legitimate Virgin Media account is in their spouse’s name, yet the letter was addressed to them. This is a common red flag scammers rely on—using partial or incorrect information to appear authentic.

🔍 Common Warning Signs of These Fake Letters

Be cautious if a letter includes:

  • A cheque you weren’t expecting
  • QR codes requiring urgent action
  • Incorrect account names or details
  • Poor formatting, spelling, or grammar
  • Generic greetings rather than personalised information
  • Pressure to act quickly

🛑 What to Do if You Receive One of These Letters

  1. Do NOT scan any QR codes
  2. Do NOT call phone numbers printed on the letter
  3. Do NOT use any links or email addresses listed
  4. Contact the company directly using the official website
  5. Report the scam to Action Fraud (UK): https://www.actionfraud.police.uk
  6. Dispose of the letter safely (shred it if possible)

☎️ Always verify using official channels

If you receive unexpected mail, payments, or suspicious correspondence claiming to be from a service provider, always:

  • Visit the official website directly
  • Use the verified contact number found on the provider’s support page
  • Never rely on numbers or links printed on suspicious letters
